Transforming Leadership: Ghim Song Goh

This interview features Ghim Song Goh, a proud alumnus of the UCLA-NUS Executive MBA program, Class of 2024/2025. Currently serving as the General Manager of Oil Business Development & Strategy at Aster, Ghim Song shares how the EMBA experience has significantly transformed his professional and personal life. He highlights the program’s unique qualities and the impactful lessons learned during his international visits, which have broadened his perspective on global markets.

Ghim Song emphasizes that the small cohort size—about 30 participants—creates a highly enriching learning environment. With such a tight-knit group, students develop a deeper understanding of content and build meaningful relationships that go beyond academics. Faculty accessibility is another key advantage, allowing for personalized mentorship and closer interactions with professors, which enhances the overall experience.

The program’s focus on peer-to-peer learning fosters a supportive community where participants can share backgrounds, aspirations, and even personal details. Ghim Song notes that this close bond results in a strong network of trust and friendship, giving graduates confidence to engage more actively and credibly in their careers. The relationships built during the program continue to provide ongoing support and collaboration.

Beyond classroom learning, the EMBA offers valuable international exposure. Ghim Song recounts visits to India and China that dispelled misconceptions and showcased rapid urban development, innovative ecosystems, and entrepreneurial spirit. The immersive visits, organized by the university, helped deepen his understanding of cultural nuances, competitive landscapes, and growth opportunities in Asia’s key markets.

The curriculum is designed to be accessible yet challenging, with support for those less strong in quantitative skills through preparatory modules. Teaching emphasizes practical application—students are encouraged to ask relevant questions and analyze real-world financial statements. Ghim Song highlights that the program aims to develop managerial judgment, not just technical expertise, preparing executives for real business challenges.

Overall, Ghim Song believes the UCLA-NUS EMBA enhances credibility, expands networks, and opens future opportunities. The strong alumni community offers ongoing mentorship and collaboration, making the investment in this program highly valuable. Ultimately, it provides senior executives with a comprehensive, immersive journey that broadens horizons, deepens leadership skills, and prepares them for success in a competitive global environment.
